Default What's the best air filter and oil filter for the SC400? What oil you running?

Hey, I bought a 1996 SC400 some weeks ago and it's currently at the mechanic getting some work done.

I was wondering what the best filter was? I've heard K&N? Yeah?

About the oil filter, though... I heard the OEM Toyota filter was ideal for this car, but not the current OEM... It's a bigger/longer filter. I remember reading an article, maybe here, about this oil filter... Which is it?

Also, what oil are you running in the car? I'm thinking about 10w-30 Royal Purple. Same stuff I put in my 1999 Accord Coupe V6. Good stuff, but what do you guys think?

You can't go wrong with an OEM Oil filter..

I've always heard that K & N makes the best filters....

A word to the wise, the OEM-sized K&N oil filter for your vehicle (I noticed in your profile) is the HP-1002. That's the same as in my RX300, but I switched over to the larger HP-2009 that fits without issue.

Why go with a bigger filter? Just curious? I noticed honda has been making their filters smaller too for older cars.

Slightly more oil capacity, better flow. Didn't notice a price difference between the 1002 and 2009 last time I was at the store.

I use mobil 1 and k&n filter. I will be switching to AMS or Royal Purple on the next oil change...

As for getting a larger oil filter you could also subsequently decrease your oil pressure which may not be a good thing. I know many honda guys who used to put a smaller filter on to increase the oil pressure in the engine.

okay fine, so everyone knows... off the top of my head i think sc400 is a 3618... you can use a 3600 which is a bigger filter... alittle tough getting on and you might need to check your oil level... 5quarts perfect fill with normal filter, low fill with other filter. as for oil 4 quarts of any 5w30 plus 1 quart of lucas oil stabilzer..

I run Royal Purple 5W-30 with a Power Enterprise MAG POWER II filter.
For an air filter, I use the Blitz LM drop-in in a BFI. I use a dry-flow filter element because I heard a rumor that "wet" filters can sometimes contaminate the filament in the MASS airflow sensor
