Difference Between 2 W58 shifters?
I love toyotas and when i got the chance to purchase my 93 sc400 with a 1jzgte/w58 i took it. Ive never had one so im learning. Looking at where the shifter comes into the car, its seems to far forward(like under the radio). I researched the trans and i see two different shifters. One comes right out the top of the trans and another has an exstension and put the shifter further back over the drive shaft. Any information on this will be great(Like if they are interchangable yearof manu..........)

welcome to CL.
I think you are in a slight predicament and I will tell you why.
The 2 main 5 spd transmissions are the W58 and the R154.
Both had 2 styles of shifters.
the old kind is a ball in socket sort of thing with usually a bent lever.
the new kind is the one which has the extension and the shifter is bolted through the extension piece.
this isn't what should concern you at the moment.
Since you have a 1jz swap, if you have a w58 transmission from a lexus it should result in the shifter being in the correct location, unless you have a w58 from a completely different model car (which will be an older version most likely). this is usually unlikely cause then they would have to find a w58 ->2jz bellhousing, and its just easier to buy a w58 which comes with the right bellhousing.
normally your problem happens when you swap a mk3 r154 transmission into an SC. you need to extend it to make up for the difference in length in the chassis.
basically either you have a mk3 r154 or a non-sc/supra w58 (was this the transmission in a non turbo mk3?) if you are having this problem. First, figure out exactly what transmission you have and let us know, donor car information would be extremely helpful. pictures speak a 1000 words you know.
the difference in length can be made up in several different ways, depending on the scenario. if you have the old style transmissions, you could make up a small amount of spacing in a swan style shifter from a different toyota car, or get all the proper parts to convert the shifter portions of the transmission.

I dont have donor car info. but i was told it was a w58. Its a 93 sc400 so it didnt come manual. It works its just the shifter isnt in the correct place. Its too far left into the side of the hole in the console. Il get pic for it but it will take a couple of days. Thanks for the good info. Is there a perfered w58 trans for these things? Is a older w58 like mine just as good as a the newer?

you should stick your head under the car and make sure your transmission crossmember is bolted on correctly. Sitting to the left is kind of wierd if you ask me.
some of the older style shifters can have some play from left to right, but if its centered to the left something is probably off a bit.
you pretty much want the w58 from a mk4 supra or SC300. not much difference between the older style and newer, both have their issues. you could possibly have a mk3 w58. that would explain why your shifter is in the wrong spot. if that is the case, you may want to consider upgrading the transmission if you're looking at extending the shifter anyways. w58 from a supra/sc is only a couple hundred bucks. labor is the big part though.

Sounds like a plan. Im definetly keeping my eye out for one. I saw the forum where the guy converted a 400 to a manual. he had a newer w58 and it put the shifter in the factory hole. i pretty sure someone cut a hole in my car for the shifter forward of the factory hole.
i will check the trans crossmember. i glanced at it and it nothing seemed to be off but i will check it more thurough when i get pics thanks

yeah, don't forget if it was originally an auto, the hole had to be cut out a little forward anyways for the shifter to sit in the stock location, cause they don't fully cut it out for automatics. but if you are in third gear and your shifter is whacking the lower part of the radio, something is not setup properly.

I just wanted to update some pictures for everyone reading this thread. I recently purchased a 84 supra with a 7mgte and w58 in it. The W58 was an aluminum plate and had the forward position shifter on it. I purchased a steel plate w58 and it has the extended shifter on it. I opened up both transmissions in an effort to swap out the extension for the shorter one because I liked the shifter exactly where it was on the old W58.
Anyways here are some pictures between the two W58's...
