The sad part even if you drop in a 2jz-gte USDM it would still be illegal for the reason our cars didn't come with it. I know some people get away with it and some say it's a 2jz and ours came with it... if you read on the law and pay attention to it.. even if it's the same model 2jz-ge the version has to be offered that year. So if you have a 96 and older a 2jz-ge non vvti and swap a 2jz-ge VVTI it would be illegal. Now how much will they enforce it is a whole different story.

2. it would be somewhat of pain what with smog laws. CARB parts maybe?

3. can't go V8 because it's not the same type of engine. when u swap out an engine, it has to be the same kind, straight 6 for straight 6, otherwise it's illegal. you'd be better off getting a 400.

cali sucks when it comes to aftermarket. i myself will try to NA-T and cross the smog bridge when i get to it. at least we have it easier then the SR20DET people.
Pretty helpful information. Don't mean to threadjack but would an engine/tranny/ecu swap from a 5spd IS300 be a legal swap into a 99+ sc300? Not necessarily for power but because 99+ sc's didn't come with a 5spd.

It wouldn't be the best way to convert over to a 5 speed but I think if you use the SC ecu and SC harness you should be ok. Because both they are VVTI. If you wanted to make it a 5 or 6 speed you could do it and it would be legal because it's not modifying the emission system/emission regulations.

You should of bought a 98+ SC400

I'm willing to bet there are more swapped and NA-T vehicles in Cali than any other state, so stop your crying and do what you can afford. And please stop blaming it on the state laws, you should have done your reaserch before jumping on a SC300.

So if it's legal and you when through state ref, why do you need "help" smogging?
