Making Power in California
As I see it there are really only 3 options for people with 300s wanting to make more power living in beautiful cali.
1. USDM 2jzgte swap. Engines are rare and by the time everything is paid for costs can be in the range of 10-15k.
2. Go NA with the ge the old fashion way. Stroker kits plus bolt-ons, will be expensive and maybe only yield gains of around 300 hp.
3. 1uzfe swap from a 98-00 400. hasn't been done but it is possible, for people w/ 5spd 300s, to attach the engine to the w58 tranny. Not sure what else would need to be done but it doesn't seem to be too expensive.
Every time anyone asks about possibly doing 2 and 3, the responses seem to always be "uh well u could go NA-t for only $2000" or "just do a 1jz swap engines only cost $1000"
These don't seem to be accurate because a 1jz swap isn't legal and will cost way more than just 1k and a good turbo set up will run at 5k plus installation and also won't be smog legal.
Sorry, I just feel like sounding off right now cuz i can't decide what to do to get around 300hp out of my 93 300 and have it be legal.

these are your options if you want power:
1: dont buy an SC
2: just say f*** it and do a swap or na-t
3: make your sc into a full race car and not have to worry about anything.
but seriously just do the swap deal with the consequences later if there will be any, but really your not going to get hastled in a lexus unless your asking for it.....

Anything except a complete stock engine swap is considered an illegal modification in California. Modifying the engine with headers, intake, and strokers will make it just as illegal as a NA-T.

I agree the na-t is the way to go the motor wit stock internals can take 500hp semi safely depending on your motor with out any problems... get the ARP head studs... a boost logic head gasket... a ECU.. a descent turbo kit.. and your should be all set!!!

2. it would be somewhat of pain what with smog laws. CARB parts maybe?
3. can't go V8 because it's not the same type of engine. when u swap out an engine, it has to be the same kind, straight 6 for straight 6, otherwise it's illegal. you'd be better off getting a 400.
cali sucks when it comes to aftermarket. i myself will try to NA-T and cross the smog bridge when i get to it. at least we have it easier then the SR20DET people.
