Before running out and getting igniters you could check for spark on all of the cyls. If you have a bad igniter it would seem that you would have at least 4 that aren't firing, same as a coil.
Oh, and ohming a coil doesn't always tell you the whole story. If you find 4 cyls missing spark, try swapping the coils to see if the other 4 are then missing spark.

Although you say you've electronically tested out the packs I just wanted to chime in add a +1 for the packs myself. Same indicators as you - changed out my driver's side pack and fixed ever since.

The igniters are located on the driver side strut tower. Both of them are stacked up.
I can try the coil replacement. I am just trying to find anyway of testing the igniters first. Other than feed power, seems like I can't really test them out without having an Oscilliscope handy. The one tool I can really use for christmas!

Well, after much debate and finicking under the hood for nearly 3 wks now, I bit the bullet and started swapping the coils to see if the car would start and idle differently.
Long story short, the drivers side coil was indeed dead, and a simple trip to the Zone got my car back on the road. Jeez... Even though the coil tested correctly with a DMM, the darn thing was the cause of my Lean codes, Rich exhaust and Bright Cherry Catalytic Converters.

This is exactly the problem I am having with a '91 LS400. No spark out of Left Side Coil,has power going to it and it ohms out in spec. same as right side! Runs on 4 cylinders,heats up exhaust system. I will put a coil on it tomorrow. I find electrical testing with a DMM frequently misleading,as I am now sure it is on this job. Thanks to everyone for the info that is gonna save me a lot of time I'm sure. Will repost with confirmation of repair. Thanks

I ended up getting the coil pack at my local Kragen store for about $65 just to let you know. I hope you did not have to drive the car too long with one cylinder bank out of commission. When it happened to me, I had to drive the car about a mile to the house (uphill). The extra heat took its toll on the left side catalyst where the cylinders were not firing and raw fuel was going through. Chunks of it got broken off inside. After I replaced the coil pack and the engine was running on all 8 cylinders again, I ended up with this annoying rattle from the exhaust system. The front part of the exhaust system needed to come down to take the broken chunks out. The 18 year-old, time-hardened nuts and bolts were a bear to get off. Cost since I wasn't equiped to do this work in my garage: $160. Needless to say, there were too many things going wrong with the car in succession leading up to this and soon after so I sold it after 9 years and 253K miles of mostly trouble-free ownership.
