I would just stick with what the car has in it.

Most Toyotas pre-03 utilize Dexron type-II (basic ATF) which you can get a Autozone, etc. But if your car says you're running Type-T IV, stick with it.

Depending on mileage, your transmission is used to one thing, if you change it you can often times cause problems. (like drinking milk your whole life, then one day switching to chocolate milk, yes its milk, but its different, might throw a red flag with your gut). Some can get away with it, some cant.

When in doubt always go OEM.

The Type-4 ATF that I have is OEM Toyota. Can I really use Type-4 in place of Type-2?

Call the dealer service department and ask for piece of mind. I'm with djl tho. That's what i'm saying when you read the requirement on the back of the bottle.

The back of the bottle didn't say anything like that. The guy at the Toyota Dealership called a Lexus place and they said that it could use Type-4... I don't know... He didn't look that sure.

I've been using T-IV in my 93 SC400 for years, perfectly fine. In fact, just flushed the transmission with 12 quarts of T-IV 6 months ago.

I don't think you can get T-II anymore.

Great. Are the trannies for the auto SC300s and 400s the same? The manual says the capacity of that tranny is just less than 9 quarts?
