Default Timing belt change ?

Hi All,

When changing the timing belt on my 93 sc400 I have a problem setting the timing. The instructions I gopt from lextreme website says the crankshaft should be set at " 0 " and the white mark on the belt should first line up with the white mark on the crankshaft.

Problem: crankshaft does not have any white marks
Evidence: it has a " U " mark.
Question: should this mark be used in substitution for the missing white mark to set the timing for the crankshaft. Please see photo

thanks, they are on the pulley and the timing cover but they are also supposed to be on the crank shaft. Check step 33 on this link http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/engine/timingbelt.html

the white mark they are showing in the link you posted is on the bottom of the crankshaft, about 1/3 around from the "U" marking going counter-clockwise..and what looks to be a perfect 180* opposite from the first indention that is just to the left of the "U"..

I've never seen a white mark anywhere but on the c/s pulley, slip the cover & pulley back on, line up the marks, remove pulley & cover carefully then take some White-out or something & make you some reference marks, go from there.

Thanks Johnny3 but setting the timing is an important part having the car run properly. It's not wise to set random white marks on the c.s., you know how sensitive these cars can be. see step 33 in the link.

I'm not talking random, I'm talking TDC reference marks for after you have removed pulley & cover as you move along with the job.

This is the first time I'm doing this job, no idea what you're speaking of. I did set the c.s. pulley at "0" before removing the pulley and timing cover. based on whats is said in the toturial, the first placement of the belt with the white mark should match the c.s.white mark. If I don't have a white mark what's my alternative. thanks

You need a TDC (top dead center) ref. mark to watch as you install the new belt over the cam wheels & guide/idler pulleys because the c/s will move a little sometimes, after you get the belt laced over every thing with your cam wheels indexed on their marks look down at the TDC ref. mark & make sure it is still correct. Turn the engine over a couple of full revolutions & check all the index marks again, if still OK you're good to go.

JOHNNY3, thanks alot. the tapping on the driver side after replacing everything turned out to be a clearance issue. the pump and belt were installed correct. Thanks for all the help. Shout out to Aliga and Scotturnot for all the help as well.
