Motor Oil Choice for High Horsepower JZ Turbo SC
My SC300 (1.5JZ with PTE76) came from deep south Florida and the previous owner ran the Valvoline VR1 racing oil in 20w-50. Now that it is in a milder climate in Atlanta, should I look to change the weight. I know I've always run Mobil1 10w-30 synthetic in my Supra and Starion and Mobil 5w-20 in the HHR....but I do like the increased zinc additive in the VR1.

you can signup for $20 a year to have a perferred customer account,and get everthing a wholesale cost. im not turbo. im n/a vvt-i 400, but i run there signature series 0w-30 racing oil. love it, im 15000mi oil change you should see what it looks like after 10000, im amazed just barley mid brown, real clean & still feels new to the touch. there the only motor oil co that warrantys motor if there oil fails.

Do your home work! All the syn isn't created equal. There are some comp studies that goover all the oils from top to bottom. Amsoil was close to the top in expense. It was also not the top in performance...but came in third out of 50 nor so so it ain't much of a slouch. I would be happy with Amsoil as a complete product line. I think Toy auto trans is full synthetic but there are additives...be sure.
Engine, trans, and diff switch to syn can be poroven on the dyno AND the temp drops in all three cause Sys rfuns cooler cause it is way more slipery.

I have been using Royal Purple for years and its excellent..Used it in everything from my z31, mk1 MR2SC, to all 5 of my s13's, K5 Blazer, etc ..this includes oil, trans, and diff fluids, and have zero complaints and never had an issue.
Royal Purple used to be blended with Molybdenum Disulfide, until scar tests were done for comparison to Amsoil/Castrol/Mobil1 and RP came in 4th place with a .852 compared to Amsoil's 1st place with only a .432. However, RP has redesigned their blend since 2005 when the scar tests were done and have removed the Moly synthetic and in a scar test done in 07, they beat Amsoil with a .422 4 ball scar test while the Amsoil retained the .432.
There is nothing wrong with RP, and most of the negative rap was due to the Moly blend that was used 5 yrs ago, which has since then been removed and improved.
Castrol and Mobile1 synthetics have always been right behind Amsoil and before the RP reformulation, beat it out on scar tests until '07.
My Choice top to bottom:
1. RP
2. Amsoil
3. Castrol
4 Mobile 1
