Default exhaust gasket leak 95 SC400

I have a leak on the right side exhaust gasket at the exhaust end of the cat converter. I got a gasket, unbolted, used dremel tool with wire brush on mating surfaces, installed new gasket.

When I was tightening up the outside bolt, I twisted the corner off the little heat shield into which the bolt screws, but i thought i had it tight. Four weeks later it's leaking again.

I have ordered new gaskets and fasteners (those little shields are $40 each!!).

I had one guy suggested putting two gaskets on that side but think I might not have tightened it up properly since i broke the corner off the fastener.

Anybody have suggestions or experience with a leak at this particular place?

where did you get your gaskets from? I have the same problem on both sides of my LS400, right after the cat.

When your motor mounts go, it torques on the exhaust system a LOT!

I believe this is the cause of this leak problem-- my 92 SC4 has it on both sides, and 3 bad motor mounts, all are seperated-- 153k-- still runs really strong -- but leaky exhaust, and a little oil burning too--

Another thing to consider, the flanges bend-- mine are bent pretty well on both sides-- so I either need to replace the cats, or try a remflex gasket on each side-- Look here: http://www.carshopinc.com/index.php/cPath/54_118

They may do the trick and avoid costly cat replacement-- It's worth spending the $30 or so to try I think--

They should supposedly solve the warped flange leakage problem-- I'll post a thread if they work for sure--

Inspect the heat shield(s) on the pipes behind the main catalytic converters. I though my gasket were leaking (they were in pretty bad shape) so I had them replaced - still leaked. Upon further inspection the front portions of the heat shiled where they're welded to the exhaust pipe had come loose - the spot weld had disappeared!

This also seems to be caused by worn out motor mounts-- My cat-- flanges are warped-- badly-- making me think it's the reason, also mine has very very little rust-- I'll look at that closely though-- It seems that these motor mounts are a problem in these cars-- I wish they made improved ones or something-- or poly ones
