I think that was a very good assessment of the ordeal Kathleen...
You got the best deal on the repair because you now have the 'piece of mind' part of the equation.
Congrats on good research.

Does anyone now why the A/C indicator light will be flashing?
(My first thought would be some sort of a service indication.)

That could be it also. A recharge would probably do it for you. I didn't hear any noises at all when my compressor went out. It was used for 11 years without proper maintenence. I was told when I changed it that you should have it checked every year if you use your A/C regularly to have it flushed/lubed.

There was a thread here recently about AC diagnostic codes. I found it by searching for "diagnostic codes." Here's how you get the codes:
Running the A/C system diagnostics: When switching ignition ON push RECIRCULATION and AUTO buttons together and watch the LCD aircond. system screen normally used for temperature settings for a numerical code indicating the problem area. BTW, zero zero (00) means normal. First, all indicator lights will flash 4 times, then a buzzer beeps. When error codes are displayed a short while later, slower display (step mode by repeatedly pushing Fresh) can be activated by pushing FRESH. Hitting OFF stops the diagnostics.
There is a list of the codes in that thread that I would paste into this reply, but they're in a jpeg and I'm far too lazy to figure out how to do that.

I have not done the AC diagnostic yet, but driving home from work, I noticed that the compressor
is starting to squeal and making unusual noises. So for sure, I know that the compressor is going out!
Damn, what better timing than during the freakin hot months of California! 20+ continuious days of triple degee digits!

My ac light was flashing the other day. I just turned it off and then turned it back on and everything was ok. It's as quiet as can be. But after reading this I think I'd better have it checked out. I'm going to try the code checking thingy first. Thanks for the info.
