Exclamation Car randomly turns off. (EGR?)

96 SC400 136K miles

At first I thought it was the tranny. That's not the case.

It mostly happens when the car is cold. I'll be at a stop light completely stopped or on the brakes to a stop light or stop sign and the car just dies decisively. No sputtering or anything. The RPM needle just drops and the car is off. It does not happen often, but it has happened on more than one occasion. When it's not happening my rpm needle seems to want to dip below the usual 500 RPM (I don't have the AC on).

It doesn't seem electrical as my gauge lights have never sputtered.

The feeling of the car turning off is similar to when I was seafoaming it and took out the vacuum hose while it was running.

What could this be?

You might try cleaning your IACV.

Does the "malfunctioning tail light" light on your gauges ever come up? My tail lights works fine, but whenever I let go of the throttle and am at a stop the light turns on. When I throttle the light disappears. This is regardless of whether I'm actually pressing the breaks or not.

I think it's weird. It may be something electrical after all?

Do your lights dim a little every time you lower or raise your windows?

This part just sounds like either a weak alternator and/or battery, or poor grounding points. Try checking the voltage at your battery at a fast idle and then compare it to the voltage at a regular idle while someone raises/lowers windows or turns your headlights on.

My guess is alternator. Does it have oil or PS fluid dripping into it by any chance.
