I have took my Air box off and replaced with a K&N air filter cone. Is there anyway I could make a chamber around the Cone filter or do I need to put the Air Box back on

weapon-r makes a decent air box for our cars, but on my 96 i had to modify it very heavily (a LOT of cutting around the edges of each piece) because after 1995 they used different intake sensors and a shorter tube (due to the lack of the big metal MAF adapter) than on later engines.

it looks like itll fit nicely around the round end of the MAF adapter on 92-95 sc's, but on mine I had to use the top section and side wall of it, and i constructed a flexible backside (which is almost air tight) out of those foil/foam fold-outs people use to block the sun from coming in thru their windshields. its by far the ugliest intake ive ever seen, but it certainly does the job and i get better throttle response than i did without the air box.

tests have shown that just slapping on a cone filter onto the end of the intake tube loses power vs the stock airbox because of all the hot air coming from the engine bay. with the air box and a modified intake, people have reported gains of up to 17hp. thats with a BFI (big ****ing intake), which works like a ram air funneling into a cold air box with a cone filter. theres a thread with the links to the DIY BFI in the sc300/400 forums.

i think my intake, while not as beastly as the BFI, does a very good job and probably has mild gains over the stock airbox (5-10hp), but thats purely speculation based on my performance with the stock airbox, with the k&N w/out air box, my current performance with k&n+air box, and the gains claimed by the bfi. as far as i know, nobody has dyno'd the performance difference between the stock airbox and a k&n+airbox setup.

Does anyone have the percentage or any other number of how much it helped the MPG. THat is the main reason I am doin it.

I did the BFI conversion on my 93sc400, and I'm satisfied with the results. I like the sound I get when stepping on the gas and the car seems to run better with the increased air flow. The last thing I need to do is make a air scoop under the head light to the filter box. Just remember to keep the piece you cut out, just in case you want to cover the hole someday, maybe in real rainy weather.

can anybody post any really clear pictures of the air scoop part of the bfi? id like to do that but the pictures on the site arent very clear as to where the tubing runs and what needs to be moved out of the way (other than the head light).

You don't need to remove the head light, just take out the filter box and the snorkel, then you will see where a scoop can be placed. Below headlight, toward the front spoiler.
