Default Sc400 is running rich still with SAFC

Need a little help. My mechanic is installing a SAFC in my SC400 and he can't seem to decrease A/F and the car continues to run rich . Replaced ECU, spark plugs 2 times , 02 sensors, Wiring, Belts etc; Any suggestions why he can't lean out the A/F. His next step was to replace MAF to see if that does anything. By the way I am purchasing the parts to install he his only completing the labor and trying to tune on dyno.

thanks,

Also an AFC is rather pointless in these cars as the ecu will learn around what the AFC is trying to do.

Default SC400 is running rich with SAFC

My car is a 1993 it has about 145,000 miles on it and is in pretty good condition overall. So are you suggesting a stand alone system to correct the richness ? Rich to the point where my spark plugs were fouled after changing them 2 months before. Rich to the point I smell gas when I start up my car and every other week I have to clean my exhaust tips beacuse they have turned black again. I do not have a specific number that will qualify how rich because my mechanic has not been able to successfully adjust the A/F. The other thing is I am not mechanically inclined so if you had a specific number that correlates to how rich I might have an answer.

Also don't get me wrong I do understand most things about what makes my car function, but have not been able to pinpoint the richness problem.

Thanks

Sounds like it is hooked up wrong or the settings are way off so I would unhook the AFC and jumper the MAF interupt wire so it would be back to stock and see if the problem is still there.

Why do you need an afc? Do you have bigger injectors?
You have most likely lost hp due to the install of the afc if you are n/a still.

Tell us more about your set up to better help figure it out and yes standalone ems is the only real way to do things and that can be pricy however you could run megasquirt which is around 500 or less and is full standalone...

Default SC400 is running rich with SAFC

My set up is stock everything. I am looking to add BFI and Nitrous but just wanted to hook up SAFC to get a baseline then add the bolt ons. During which I was always running rich but in the last 2 months before storing for winter it got ridiculous with the black smoke and all. I am anxious to get her ready for spring and what I thought would be an easy fix is a problem. The latest as of just minutes ago my mechanic said that the EGR is remaining open all the time. To answer the question posed before I am running rich and the number was 10 when it should be at if I am not mistaken 14.7. Feel free to correct if I have mistated. Now my understanding is that we need to determine is at which point the EGR remains open the mechanical or electrical portion. Or should I just buy another EGR? Again looking for some suggestions

the sc400 is known to run terribly rich, you are right in trying to correct it.
If you are not having success in lowering it with just the safc, ecu is probably learning on you too quick or you have a mechanical problem.
you can try resetting the ecu and redoing what you did except this time disconnect the o2 sensors plugs so it cannot relearn on you.
