Smoking twins and.....smoking twins?

i wish i would have got into auto mechanics when i was a bit younger---although i still might apprentice at my friends shop when i have free time if things go as planned.
It changes everything if you can do at least some of the work yourself.

I hear ya Ali, but it may be cheaper to just go with what I have instead of finding a GE block and having it rebuilt. I am not even sure it NEEDS a rebuild. I hope it doesn't! I am going to see what I can figure out.

Just a couple things I did on the way home today. I for sure figured out that the car smokes after a long decel where vacuum is high. If I boost hard up to about 90mph and then engine brake down in 5th to 60mph or so, as soon as I tip back in, it puffs smoke for maybe a second.
I can not see ANY smoke while boosting. It has not smoked on startup either.
Also, if I open the oil filler while it is running, I get no smoke from the filler hole. I also get no smoke from the breather hose on the pass vc if I unplug it. I get a mild vacuum from it, presumably from the PCV.
I am getting my compression tester back this week from my buddy to test compression, and I will run a leakdown on it this weekend.
I am also going to pull all the IC piping, clean it with gas so it's spotless, and then keep an eye out for new oil finding its way in there.
This is frustrating, but I will keep this thread updated. If compression, and leakdown come back ok, I am going to send the twins off to have them checked over.

Ive been following your thread and feel for ya stockhatch. Its just a nuisance letting people see the smoke especially from a Lex. I'm going through similar issue with my single but I think its just my valve guides. If its still running strong Id put my money on the twins..you just never know what you get and this is your second set on JDM's, seems to always be issues wit them that why I never ran them. But best of luck to you I hope your Comp check is A ok

Well the current set are JDM hybrids from Speed for Sale. They have 4k on them. I bought them from roadkill5_0. I kinda doubt its the twins, but I wont rule them out until everything is tested.

If you have oil in your ic parts or piping, likely your engine isn't the cause. usdm twins are the way to go. Drain your intercooler also.

No way USDM twins are better than the SFS hybrids. I HAD oil in the intercooler piping, but I don't think there is any new oil since swapping the twins. I am going to make sure of that though.
I hate to chance buying another used shortblock Ali. If it comes down to it, I will either buy a new Toyota GTE shortblock and have a machine shop check it, or just rebuild what I have.

New symptom I noticed today. After prolonged idling, it will blow smoke when you rev it. I was at a friends house to get my compression tester, and let the car idle in his driveway. When I went to pull out about 15 mins later, it blew a cloud.
Now I am really leaning toward turbos. If the VSS were so bad that the car would smoke like that, why is there zero smoke on cold start? Before I replaced the VSS it would always smoke on cold start.
At any rate, I have my compression tester back and I am going to go do a compression check tonight.
