Default tt fuel pump help

hello community i am helping a buddy of mine install a tt fuel pump in his sc300 1992 but we have come to a problem . The car starts and after 5 seconds it dies . We started it up again numerous times and still dies after 5 seconds , when I try to give it gas it just shuts off . The car is a 1992 , we took the original pump and noticed it has a connector ontop of the fuel pump 2 wires positive and negative , so we cut the 2 wires going to the connector because the tt pump just has positive and negative no connector so we place the negative on the negative terminal and the positive on the positive terminal but the car won't stay on ,it's like it's not getting gas . We don't hear the pump when we pass the ignition but yet again he said he never heard it with the stock pump either . should we do the 12volt mod and maybe this corrects the problem , I don't see why this mod would have anything to do with it . Any input is appreciated .
