Default Is this mechanic lying to me?

So i went in to get my timing belt replaced. I took the cover off and seen some cracks on the belt, but the mechanic said he rather do the water pump to which i can see why since it's all apart. But he said usually the water pump will leak since the belt is new and will be tighter. Its going to cost me an additional 80$ for labor and like 200$ for the OEM water pump, is he right or is he trying to get more money out of me?

Sorry for my newbness not mechanically incline YET

You should replace the pump, yes.

Pricing varies wildly according to who/what/where but it doesn't seem that out of line.

If your doing a timing belt job, I would replace the water pump regardless. Everything is going to be accessible once you take apart the motor. Its not something you should take a chance with if you want to save time and money. its only another 100 or so dollars. Make the right decision!

yes do it. What's your total bill for just the timing belt? I know I spent over a grand for the 90k service. Then I found all types of things wrong so the cost just kept adding up. Just hope you don't have a cracked distributor, that is big $$$

Definitely replace the water pump, it'll go one day. Rather replace it now, and save money later.

unless the waterpump has been replaced within the past year then you better do it all at the same time. the waterpump is behind the timing belt, waterpumps have moving parts and generally fail after a few years anyway. So lets say you replace the timing belt and not the waterpump to save yourself $250-300, then a few months down the road the waterpump fails guess what... your going to have to pay the machanic for his labor again to pull the same parts off so what would have cost 250-300 is now going to cost double. remember its the labor that usually makes the job expensive

You shouldn't be charged any additional labor to replace the water pump because he would have had to take the timing belt off to get to it anyway. By the way the water pump is driven by the drive belt not the timing belt.

I'd do it while the other work is being done- saves both time and $$$. But as far as the work goes, you might want to shop around, unless you trust this guy implicitly.

a $200 part is big money...you picked the wrong car to own.

OP yes id suggest a new water pump. When they let go its ugly and overheating an old aluminum head could lead to a far more costly repair

Agree with everyone else, that is a part that is needed to be changed with timing belt.
