Default sc4 vs sc3

from the searching i have been doing everyone says that an 3 and a 4 put down the same hp (about 175-180). so this means that the trannys are eating up almost 100hp. i also have been reading that the 3 with a manual and a 4 auto are about the same in the 1/4. my qusetion is what about an 3 w/clutch and a 4 with as tc. just curious. i am thinking about buying a 1998 or newer 4 so if a 3 is about the same power i will save the money.

IMO - go for the 5spd SC300 for real power oportunities. I took a SC400 on a roll from 20 to 80, last week in lexington I'm guessing 97+ because it was RSP. Not sure what mods he had. It may not have been a good driver. I have a vitek clutch, safc and opened intake at this point. Of course, a SC400 with TC and nice shot or supercharger, dare I say turbo - could/would be a nice ride out of the hole (top end with the turbo). But the real answer is up to you. Look around. Find what you like for the right price in good condition and take it from there.
Good luck.

93 sc300 - applicable through the years basically

sc400 - through the years

adam,

As much as SC autos loose a lot power because of the transmission, they definitely do not loose 100hps. 91-97 has less power and a different transmission than 98+.

91-97 4-speed trans,
91-95 250hp, 260 lb-ft
96-97 260hp, 270 lb-ft

98+ 5-speed trans, 290hp, 300 lb-ft

So when you compare, for example, 95 SC300 with 5-speed manual to SC400 with 4-speed auto, they are about the same in acceleration. On the other hand 98+ are little bit quicker. So if you were not planning to modify the car I would choose 98+ SC400 in the heartbeat.

overclocker,
yeah, i just found out yesterday (monday) and my jaws just dropped. i'm going to call them today and speak to another rep because he could be just talking out of his butt.

I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, so don't quote me on anything. This is what they tell me, but I'll find out more details. What I'm trying to find out is whose car they used as a prototype!

Default Do Luck...you're da man...

good question for them... I found a company back in July that said they had started a S/C for the SC400, and it should have been done early November. I lost their site info,... I was at the speed shop in Austin on their computer, and of course didn't remember to save the link,...I called the number on the site. I haven't had any luck tryin' to find it. I believe they were located in Cali somewhere.

Default One more round of nonsense...

while at the dealership,...the service rep introduced me to the "speedmaster mechanic"... Mr speed says there is a S/C for the 98-99 SC400,...and I respond,... how is that so, be they have the same engine,...just different tuned ECU and VVTi,... he goes on about coiless distr. and some other garbage, and that he would give me the website in a couple of days on who makes this. I'm like how come nobody knows about it?

So waiting for that answer,.... I'm sure I already know what the answer is, but I'll give him a full opportunity to clown his own azz.
