Default Oil light keeps turning on but my oil dipstick shows full

Hey guys, i bought my SC about a month ago. Its a 1993 5 spd with 143,xxx miles on it. I did the oil change with my cousin and we put the right amount of oil in. Now just recently my oil light has been coming on, it's yellow, but when i check my dipstick, it's at full. I don't know what could be happening. Has this problem ever happened to any of you guys? What could it be? Any help would be great! Thanks!

When do you check your oil? You should check it before running the engine early in the day so that the oil have settled down at the bottom then you'll get accurate reading. More likely you got a leak. It's that time of our SC's right now that the engine oil is leaking from the pan, a lot of owners are experiencing it right now. But if you're not, then most likely it's your oil level sensor going bad.

Could be oil pressure...

are you sure pressure is getting through the system. I wouldn't run the car if the oil light was on personally I've had oil starvation problems in the past.. They hurt (you're wallet)

Hi there,

Look for any leaks (I've just noticed one on my oil pan as well!) and check your oil pressure. I don't know how it is on the US-spec SC but I'm assuming it's a combined light for level/pressure.

Could be the sensor itself lying to you. I chipped a corner off of the float on my oil level sensor and since then, it comes on at random times even though the level is verified as good. You may want to pull your sensor and check it out. I still need to replace mine, as it is pretty annoying when that light comes on, goes off, comes back on etc etc...

I have the opposite issue, my car use to leak oil before I replaced several gaskets and the oil light never came on lol. It would sometimes be pretty dangerously low too.

Make sure oil is pumping to the head. A quick way to check is to turn on the car, and open the oil cap. Oil should come out in little droplets.

Sounds bad, but it's the easiest way to check. Or you could tow it into a shop and have them check oil pressure for you. Any mechanic shop should have an oil pressure tester, or you could temporarily install an oil pressure gauge yourself.

If its the yellow oil light by the tach, he does not have a pressure issue. That light only indicates level issues, not pressure. The oil pressure light is red and down in the lower right corner under the speedo. If that comes on when the car is running you DO need to be concerned.

+1 ^^^ if your oil light is coming on but the car runs fine check your harness running to the oil sensors.

i just dealt with this problem and after cleaning out the pickup tube, changing sensors, etc i noticed the harness was tore up and that was why the lights were tripping out

Wow thanks alot guys for all this info. I asked my teacher at UTI about it and he said to check the sensor since my oil level reads at full. He said that maybe some oil might be leaking past through the oil pressure sensor. I usually get home at 8pm and it's too dark to look for it so i'll be waiting for tomorrow morning. I'll check the oil pan, filter and the sensor and let you guys know what i find.

Also where would i find the oil pressure sensor? Would it be next to the oil filter?

The oil PRESSURE sensor is not the one you need to be concerned with, but it is located behind the PS pump screwed into the block. The oil LEVEL sensor which is the one you are having problems with bolts into the upper oil pan on the drivers side of the car. Follow the dipstick tube down to the pan and look beside it. The oil level sensor bolts to the pan in that same area.
