If that weren't true than every guy I know basically HACKED their car to do a manual swap. It is the only way. Take apart your center counsel area and you will quickly see that there is no way around it (unless you buy a 5spd tranny tunnel and replace it completely which is a huge waste of money and still requires even more hacking).
That is the only mod you need to do to the tranny tunnel, the hole is not very big, it's probably a good 6"X10" roughly speaking. Just make sure you coat the edges of the hole to protect the bare metal from any elements.

I guess if he has money laying around, then sure a factory piece will be cleaner (so he can show it off to all his buddies at car shows.
As far as the tunnel, there are no options.... you HAVE to cut an opening in the tunnel if you are going Auto>manual. That's the end of the story.

I dont remember exactly, but the w58 shifter sits further up than the automatic hole. There is no way to avoid it.
Cutting the transmission hole should be the "last" thing you have to do. Mount it up to the engine and everything then try to make it sit normally and you'll see where you have to cut and just cut to that location. Becareful do not cut the hole too large or else weaken body frame + exhaust heat will kill you when driving.

So im hearing some conflicting information from a couple of different people. When swapping an r154 does the trans tunnel need to be modified? From what Ive read in the diy section it should be a pretty much straight swap granted i have the shifter extension, bell housing ,etc.

thank god for shift boots!
after seeing that weld job on the extended shifter.
and by the way. when u got that part @ 135 dollars. that was like 2 years ago.
toyota secretly raises the prices on low quanitity parts by 25% every year.
i bought a speedo part for my MR2 only paid like 80. now its almost a hundred. and i have a commercial account with them.

If you have a stock auto SC you will need to cut your tunnel if you have an MK3 R154 with the stock Mk3 shifter housing and shifter .
When you remove your center console you will notice a little hump on the tunnel in front of the auto shifter hole before the radio. here pop those 2 caps that covers the hole for the shifter insulator and you are done .
the MK3 R154 and 92-94 sc300 w 58 sits just like this the shifter will be almost in the radio keep in mind this trans doesnt have any type ****er extension .
I took these pics 3 years ago when i was doing my 1jz swap
with the Chaser R154 i stll had to cut my tunnel to fit properly.
With the MK3 shifter if you extend it about 4" it should come into the auto shifter hole.
We all have different ways of doing things some people like to cut and weld their shifters, some don't .
some people like using the factoty parts to extend their shifters some don't
some leave it just the way it it and punch the radio everytime they go from 2nd to 3rd or or from 4th to 5th.
some people put a torch on the shifter , heat it up and bend it back !
Nice thread guys ! let's keep it clean

^ Get a sheet metal and put some tapping screws thru it, it worked great form me on my last SC.
Get some insulator , because that tunnel will be burning hot specially when you go auto to manual with a swap 1jz or 2jz .
Trust me on that we started a thread about that 2 maybe 3 years ago lol you guy may wanna look into that.

Here's what I did when I did the r154. The pic is kinda dark but you get the idea. I also had some dynamat type of material to cover the aluminum sheet to help keep down the noises and heat.
