Default ideas on traction for crank pulley?

Oddest issue....... crank pully not getting enough traction to keep belt from squeaking. Checked other pulley's for runout, drag, and play.....nothing. Tensioner is at proper lbs. belt squeaks only at the actual crankshaft pulley and no other pully (where it is getting it's drive traction at).

So I grabbed the tensioner with a 14mm 1/2in drive and torqued it by hand while running and it STILL squeaked under any tension. WTF?

I'm thinking I need to find a way to make the crank pulley have more traction by sanding or grinding the threads, but I'm afraid it will cause wear to the belt since I can't really get into the grooves well and I'll just be adding traction to the top of the groove.

Normally I'd have blamed the low traction on belt drag from a pulley, but everything spins great even when loaded up. Side note: No issues with power steering or voltage, nor AC so it's not really slipping like crazy it's kinda of just squealing.

So......... any ideas, or comments on sanding the pulley grooves for traction?

I'm having a theory the belt is bouncing on the pulley since it looks like it might not be perfectly balanced.

It's got that bearing sound to it, but if you pull the belt off it's quiet as a mouse and if you spray belt conditioner on it, it goes quiet instantly. (then the belt conditioner starts sounding like peeling duct tape and is louder than the damn squeal was).

Decided I could swap the pulley quicker than I could get an answer and I was right Fixed it in 4 minutes flat.

For those unaware I keep a spare "everything".

I think all the rust scale is giving you your needed traction At least it's fixed.

Well it helps traction, but the issue was as mentioned in the second post. The pulley was out of round. Now that I changed it there is less vibration at 2000 rpm so I know immediately driving it the old pulley was in bad shape.

On my black SC, 2000 rpm vibration was engine and tranny mounts......... on the white one it was this pulley. If the belt wouldn't have been squealing I would have spent $300 on mounts.

........of course I still might anyway...... but at least I won't be aggravated when it doesn't fix it. For once I am glad it was squealing.

Although tedious if you used sandpaper in between the grooves, it would've also worked.

Glad its fixed though.

That noise could also have been the early indications that your harmonic balancer (rubber part of your crank pulley) is about toast. Not unusual on these old cars. Glad you had a replacement handy.

Sandpaper isn't gonna fix a warped pulley.

That's what I figure was the deal.
