I blocked the EGR with a soda can!

I know this debate has been fought before, something about engine cooling because of reciculating the burned gases. Isnt there also some elec. solenoids involved with the EGR system? If all could be deleted and was a benefit it would be a nice DIY showing all parts removed. Prob. not a good idea in Calif.

One deletes the EGR mainly to lower air intake temperatures. Seems odd, does it not, to spend money on cooling your intake in order to improve air/fuel ratio only to have the EGR pumping 700° air back into the intake manifold? Of course, the added benefit includes keeping that nasty carbon crap out of the engine. However, bear in mind that EGR works by actually REDUCING the combustion temperatures in the head, which helps to prevent pre-ignition as well as lowing NOx emissions.
The big question: Will deleting the EGR cause the vehicle to fail a state emissions test?

If identified, deleting the EGR will cause the vehicle to fail a CA smog test no matter how fancy or not the block off. I don't think it will pass a visual inspection in this case. At the "Smog Only" and "Gold" smog stations they look pretty closely at the system and I would be surprised if the failure to recirculate the combustion gases wouldn't show up pretty dramatically in the numbers.

We dont have emmision testing in my area, so that aside is it worth the effort and the time to clean the engine area up by removing the EGR . If its lowering temps. in the head it dosent seem like it is.
