just make sure to scrap as much head gasket residue as you can off and try not to scratch the surface. that's pretty much what i did on mines.

Depends on how taper your heads are. I'd service them to get it done the first time.

It doesn't matter as along as you a are using an organic HG. The graphite will suck up any tiny gaps.

Multi layer steel head gaskets however, MUST be resurfaced as they don't bend or stretch at all.

I'm willing to guess the OP blew his head gasket, not just changed it. Though im not sure if you blew your HG either.

The rule of thumb is if you overheated and blew your HG, then you must resurface.
If your HG is on its way out and hasn't overheated yet, you may want to consider resurfacing.
If your Motor/HG was healthy and you are upgrading to an OEM TT headgasket, it is not necessary to resurface, but some people like to. I didn't.

Listen to this guy. But keep in mind for how much work it is to change a HG you may as well get the machine work done. Your going to be so uber pissed if you have to do it again.

Texas Ranger: She said "No, you're wrong." I said "You got a lumpy butt." She got mad at me and yelled at me and I pissed in my pants and I never did change my pee-pants all day. I'm still sittin' in my dirty pee-pants.
