GTE block rebuild piston ring gap help.
just got my block back from the machine shop. im gonna be running stardard size ring and aiming to make 400-450hp. what do u guys gap your rings at? RING #1 , #2, and #3.

I always use OEM specs on the 1st and 3rd ring.
On the 2nd ring, I like to go .002" tighter. This helps with the sealing under vacuum.
If you use Aftermarket Forged piston like JE or ROSS, they come with a spreadsheet on how much to gap your rings based on the power it will be making.

its a used block with with a fresh re-hone . machinist told me to use standard size rings. when i threw the rings :

Just as I thought. Since you have a seasoned block, you are outside of spec on them already. Even so, you are still within the service limits. Did you turn a piston upside-down and push the rings a couple inches down the bore and square them?

I recommend the stock gaps I posted above, but you are already beyond them. By other set, do you mean your used stock rings? It is interesting that they have smaller gaps. Do they have carbon buildup on the ends, making the gaps just seem smaller?

Which rings went to .016? Did your machine shop check for taper? Ideally, you have minimal taper in the bores. A .004-.006 change in gap within the stroke range of the bore seems like quite a bit to me. It is recommended to push the rings down halfway so the piston used to square them is fully into the bore, and "square" itself.
