Default SC400: intermittent fuel smell in cabin

Just recently started getting a fuel smell inside the car after driving it. Generally I'll get it after coming back into the car a while after driving it. For example, I'll drive to work in the morning and smell nothing. Get back in around lunchtime, and can smell gas in the cabin. I've checked under the car and have never seen any leakage.

It's intermittent. Right now, I haven't smelled gas in the cabin for several days, and have been driving it mostly every day.

The last time I smelled it, I was able to trace it to the driver's side of the trunk. I had a faint gas smell all throughout the car, but it was definitely strongest in that area. Pulled up the carpet and poked around, couldn't find anything amiss.

Any thoughts?

possibly something to do with the charcoal canister/ evap system? generally gas smells are associated with some weather lines dealing with the evap system. i would start from the charcoal can up front and trace the lines all the way back and you might find one all cracked leaking vapors

i guarantee the vent at the bottom of the charcoal canister is kinked and not venting correctly.

pull the charcoal canister out and look at the bottom of it.

It's the charcoal canister. Both my SC300 and SC400 did the same thing.

The charcoal canister sits up next to the firewall where the engine harness goes through. it's oval in shape. (at least on both my SC's it was :-P)

Thanks everyone. I checked and I have no charcoal canister; just have an empty spot where it looks like it used to be. I guess the previous owners deleted it.

I wasn't able to crawl way up under the car, so I couldn't tell exactly where the vent lines from the gas tank are going now. Maybe just into the open air.... ?

Anyone know if there's a way to properly vent the gas tank and avoid the intermittent fuel smell, with my charcoal canister deleted? Or is the answer to go buy another charcoal canister?

Thanks for the help...
