Default Gaskets and RTV and FIPG

I own 92 ls400 with 239,xxx and same year sc300 with 189,xxx. I have done the trans pan and filter on my ls400. My question is what is everyone using when they seal up they're pans? , whether it be your transmission pan or oil pan? I'm coming across a lot of rtv gasket types. But when I Put on my tranny pan for the LS I used a gasket. My local auto parts store carry the gaskets that I need, but is there a difference to using rtv instead of an actual gasket? Im assuming most oem applications call for rtv... I just don't like the idea of using rtv because I had to clean it all off the tranny pan for it to mount flush. Is rtv good or bad? Can a gasket be used instead of rtv? Example would be the sc300 throttle body. I haven't taken mine off but ive read there's a metal gasket stamped into it that is reusable?

Thanks in advance

I've always used gaskets and used rtv to hold gasket in place.

Yea the TB metal gasket is reusable...definitely don't want to use gasket sealer there. The black FIPG (~$15) works great.

simply put, if it has a gasket already, replace it with a gasket of similar structure and design. Don't attempt to substitute a solid gasket with RTV or FIPG. Same applies the other way around, don't sub a solid gasket for RTV/FIPG. It has to do with the mating surfaces between metals and their application.

I agree with not usin gasket sealer. But what about a rubber or some type gasket? The manual specifies a gasket.

Yea that gasket is a stamped metal one...you may be able to order a rubber one but your car should have the metal one in there already. Its like a plenum gasket and is reusable.
