California sc400?

I have personal experience with this very issue, having moved to SoCal from New England in 2012.
Any car (FED or CAL) in good working order is California Legal- so long as it has over 7,000 miles on the ODO.
My SC400 has moved from CT -> CA -> CT -> MA -> CA throughout its life and is still on the road.
The referee passed me without ANY catalyst sticker (repainted hood) because my SC is over 300,000 miles. I asked what the mileage threshold was. I was informed that after 200,000 miles a referee doesn't care about the sticker/visual inspection and you just have to pass the sniffer test at the SMOG station.
California will accept a Federal Emissions vehicle with over 7,000 miles on the ODO.
If you buy a NEW car, and it has LESS than 7,000, The People's Republik of Kalifornia will not allow you to register the vehicle (cars must be visually inspected at the DMV by a referee when you register for a plate). So at that point just take that "bucket list" road trip around the country and you're over 7,000 miles.
Hope this helps.

I really appreciate the info, That is interesting in terms of modifications, so basically as long as it passes the sniffer, I can do whatever I want to a car with over 200,000 miles!
Another interesting thing about smogging in california is that it is really arbitrary, whether you get visually inspected or not, last two times I smogged a car there, it was a heavily modded turbocharged 2001 PT cruiser, and they never looked, just the dyno sniffer.
Many thanks for having that pearl of wisdom I was looking for.
