Cranksahft Pulley Nut Removal
With the cooler weather, I'm ready to tackle the timing belt, water pump, etc, on my SC300. The last timing belt that I changed was in my '86.5 Supra. The crankshaft pulley nut on that car was torgue'd at 200 ft-lbs. Without the special tool, it was extremely difficult to remove the nut. I must of spent 3 hours figuring out how to remove the nut. The SC300 is torgue'd at 239 ft-lbs. Now to the point: How can I remove the pulley nut without the special tool?? Thanks.

I was planning on biting the bullet and getting the special tool but if anyone has any ideas we'd like to hear them... Perhaps a tool rental has such a device?
Anyone done this?

I pulled mine guys... dunno the torque on it; but even starting the car with the ratchet on the ground wouldn't work; the battery exploded
i bought a 3ft breaker bar and a strong steel pipe to fit over the end of it... i used every inch of space i had... i put the car in neutral with the parking brake on and twisted that ***** HARD HARD....
and it came off...
you need pulley remover tools to pull the crank pulley off tho... it only cost $15 at a local DAPS; very nice tool; its shaped sorta like a set of brass knuckles and has a LONG bolt... you'll see what i'm talking about...
but the pulley came off relatively easy after that; and it was easy enough to put back on

I've suspected it would be pretty difficult. I briefly tried with an impact socket and decent impact wrench (600lbs/ft). Also tried a moderate breaker bar without luck. A buddy of mine has a monster Ingersol Rand impact wrench that we'll try--you'd think 800+lbs /ft would do the trick.

The problem I'm anticipating is not so much in applying enough force to remove the nut but in holding the pulley in place while trying to turn the nut. In the "old days" we use to drop the oil pan and block off the crank with a 2X4.

i dunno the torque output on my impact wrench; but it didn't even come close to getting it off...

this is the same thing propping a ratchet on the pulley bolt against the ground and cranking the car... motor sure didn't turn over... but the battery exploded after about 5 seconds
