Unhappy What happened when you blew up your w58?

Just curious at what the signs were when you blew up your w58? Did the trans lock up? Did it not shift? Did it pop out of gear? Hole in the side of it? Any noises? I did something to mine tonight and if it were a Honda I would think that something happened to the pressure plate by the way it is acting. It still moves, but does not want to shift into gears unless the car is off. Burn out gone bad. I am hoping it will be the clutch so I can replace the ACT clutch/pressure plate that is in there now. Clutch had about 20k on it. I will be pulling it tomorrow night so Ill post some pics of what happened.

Wow! I was expecting to see a broken spring (happened on another car I had - also ACT) or something similar.

In my old toyota truck I had (w55 I think) I shattered the clutch into dust. Not sure how it happened, but when I seperated the motor and tranny nothing but dust came out and the clutch was gone.....

but you did a really good job too!

The Ferric material on the disk failed due to excessive heat and crazed itself to the flywheel.
Not uncommon but you might want to consider that the release bearing may have also failed as it did not release from the FW

My foot kind of hung up on the clutch pedal and I think it might have been totally my fault. The release bearing looks to be in great condition. I ordered a full faced ACT clutch today, new release bearing, and output shaft seal. Hopefully that will all be here tomorrow. I just need something to cruise around in for a upcoming show in Ocean City MD. When I go single Ill probably need to upgrade to a twin disc and r154 combo. Ill post some pics of my flywheel and PP when I get them back from the machine shop.

There was still a little bit of scoring leftover after machining but Im sure it will be ok for a temporary fix.

So I installed the full faced disc last night and it drives great. Chatter is gone, no more squeeks, and it shifts at low rpm's better. I also used Redline 75 90 which may have something to do with the shifting. I used a bulk gear oil when I origionally did my swap. I am going to wait a few miles before I try any higher rpm shifts. I also got a new shift boot/bezel from lexus. Drilled and tapped an old vibrant shift **** from a Honda to a 12x1.25 thread and screwed that on. I have to drill it a little deeper tonight so it will sit straight.
