Being that it's a 98, it's a VVTi motor that doesn't have a distributor. Since it cranks, are you sure the immobilizer chip is not bad? I know if the car doesn't read the chip in your key, it will crank, but will not start up.

D'oh. Didn't know the ignition system changed. When my ignition coil was bad, sometimes it didn't want to start. Granted you checked that, did you check the lower one too?

If you have CEL, Then might be crank sensor or cam sensor. But the immobilizer is true, but if it was starting before that's shouldn't be the problem. The immobilizer doesn't need power to start the car.

I though the immobilizer would not let the starter operate, not sure but something to look into to reduce the possibilities.

Rent / borrow a scanner and pull codes if any. That'll tell us if it's a sensor issue most likely. Otherwise check for spark and see if it will run by spraying a little ether in the intake. Should narrow down possibilities. As stated it needs air fuel spark. You don't have one of the three.

Fuel pump buzzing may not necessarily indicate it's good. Might want to check fuel pressure.

sounds like a possible bad ecu issues if the check engine light is erratic then that is one of the things you should look into per the manual among a few others.

Please do NOT buy the parts from the dealer. There are plenty of ECU's for sale here on Clublexus, or what you can do is have a service rebuild it. (Around 150 for good service)

Immobilizer does not stop the car from cranking, just firing. I figured that out when I threw an r154 in my sportcross and forgot to put the key that came with my 5spd ecu on my key ring. Starter is a body function only.

^^ Good info that is handy to know, I tend to stay away from immobilizer cars when possible.
