Default chain type of noise in the engine bay?

when i got home today, i thought i heard a weird noise when i gave the car a little more gas than usual. i parked the car and revved it and when the RPMs were dropping there was this chain type of clicking noise, like when you're riding a bike and you don't pedal and it clicks. it's only when i rev higher and i start to hear it as well if i floor it pretty hard when driving. what could it be??? car has 216k miles on it so i wouldn't be surprised if it was something serious.

Could be the timing belt... I'm not a mechanic though.

could be like the accessory belt tensioner or something more engine related but I would think the noise would be more consistent. It is not uncommon for a 1uz to be fine with over 120k after a timing belt change, some don't do it till close to 200k for the first time since you have a 1992 which is the non-inteference version.

I have had a similar noise on my older sc3 that ended up being under the car. on each side of the sc400 auto trans there will be 2 exhaust support brackets that help support the exhaust and bolt to the transmission. over time they can get weak from vibrations and break in half. Then when you give it the right amount of gas or sudden decel, basically anything that can rock the car a little the 2 broken halves can contact and will usually vibrate or click against each other in a hard to find and annoying fashion. Its worth a quick look under there to make sure they are not broken. If they are bend them so they wont touch each other anymore.

yea i listened to it again, its only on harder vibrations when flooring it or hard RPM decel. i think my exhaust is in bad condition so i'll look into it.

Yeah take a look, when it happened to me I couldn't find it and it was only after the 4th shop had it up on the rack that the oldschool mechnic had one of those aha! moments and then showed me the broken hanger. on the SC3 there is only one on the passenger side. SC4 probably has one on each side. Its a toyota thing it helps support the weight of the headers and keep them from cracking. Even the supra TT has the same thing on the passenger side where the downpipe meets the midpipe. I usually take them out on the sc3 first time I have the exhaust down as they are not really needed the stock system has so much flex in it anyways.

Its actually a bit tough to remove you will have to unbolt part of the exhaust but If you are handy with a hammer just pound the broken half which is connected to the trans side an inch or so away from the other half so they can't make cricket noises with each other anymore. other option is the grinder but to just stop making the noise you can't beat the hammer, or just use a prybar inbetween and spread the 2 halves apart.
If you wanted it to repair I guess you could weld it back but dunno if you can weld or not.
