HELP!!! Drive Train Experts> Grinding/whine noise from rear end
#16
So today I confirmed that the wheel bearings are snug as can be. So that rules out the wheel bearings I believe. They don't move at all actually.
I was able to get a video for you folks of the diff making some noise when spinning the tires. Seems like there's a bit to much play?.. but I have no idea? maybe that's normal. Just trying to figure out if I really do need to pull the diff out or not.

Let me know what you all think.

Fixed mine today with the new half shaft, driver's side. Looking at yours, my guess is the similar combination of low coils and LSD (welded in my case) put a lot of stress on those 20-year-old CV joints.
Edit: Your car has so much of the stuff I'm looking at doing to mine over the next few months. That dash, CCU, rear lower control arm/things. Nice to see that sort of stuff actually on a car 😊

looks to me that the noise is in sync with the rotation of driveshaft whether in forward or reverse motion
so if the noise is on the rear , I will assume its inside the diff ... as Omar said , put another diff and see if the noise disappears and you can isolate the problem

Diff it is indeed. I spoke to Curt at Elmhurst Toyota and he to said its definitely the backlash inside the diff is off. So ill be pulling it out this weekend, inspecting it than most likely rebuild it with new bearings a such while its out.

^^ I know but I wanted to rule out any other possible things that it could be before I tackled this job.
Got the diff out over the weekend and sure enough the back lash is off. Pretty much on the outside edge of the ring gear it self. I couldnt find any gear paint so I went to an arts and crafts store and picked up some oil based yellow paint which worked out fine. But the damn paint is everwhere inside the diff but should be ok after a good cleaning.
Also the clicking is coming from the inside of the LSD. I hope this is normal and not broke

So diff has been rebuilt with new Toyota bearings by a local drive train shop and the noise is still there. Its diffidently coming from the diff.
Here's what it sounds like..
Calling the shop back today to see what they have to say... might have to take it back off and send it back to them... what a pain.

Why would it be the half shafts if I didn't have this problem before this diff was put in... why would it start doing this with this diff? Makes no sense if the factory diff and shafts never made any sort of noise before the diff was replaced...
Also I had the car secured on stands and went though all the gears. While it was in gear at 30 MPH I went under the diff to only hear the noise coming directly from it...
