Default weird hot air coming thru vents with ac off

i recently installed a cold air box around my k&n cone filter. ive noticed a strange occurence depending on how i have it set up. if i have the front edge of my air box sealed off (it sits flush up against that black plastic that rides along the front of the engine bay) everything is fine.

however, when i dont have it sealed and its sitting with about a 1/2 inch gap from the plastic, i get better throttle response (it actually is noticeable, ive tried it with and without sealing the front edge just to make sure my mind wasnt playing tricks). also, when i have that front lip up slightly, i get some light-moving hot air coming thru my AC vents even without the ac on at all - BUT if i turn the *** all the way down it goes away? it doesnt do this with the front of the air box sealed off. could the lack of the seal be messing with my maf sensor or something?

also, am i getting better throttle response because im getting some extra air coming thru from under the tip of the hood? i havent messed with the stock snorkel thing, so thats my only source of air besides the unsealed front edge. is this having a sort of miniature ram air effect? and would it hurt to remove the rubber sealed that sits flush with the front edge of the hood (id only remove about 12 inches of it) to allow more air flow in? im probably not going to do this since that rubber sealing is there to prevent water from getting in when it rains/wash my car, correct?
