sc300 sc400 driveshaft center support bearing / roaring sound / vibration
#17
Thx guys.
JT51, the sound you described ("No clicking anymore from center console area or rubbing sound from what appeared the right front") is exactly what i hear in my car. This is terrible, $1100 at only 50 kmiles+.
Actually let me verify this before i spend the money. This sound can be heard only at aroung 25-30 mph and when the car is coasting (foot of the gas) even during braking. As soon as i put my foot on the gas even just a little, it'll go away. Does it sound like it's the drive shaft bearing?
Thx

<< That doesn't sound like the driveshaft because you should be able to hear it more when you press the throttle. Unless the noise only comes from running the car at very low RPMs. The U-joints might have seized up on you. In that case, you would have to replace the entire driveshaft.>>
I didn't notice the rpms but coasting at 25-30 mph it has to be low. So with a bad U-joints, it still needs a whole new driveshaft? I thought i was getting good news
thx

Amati5,
That was my sound, low rpm rubbing sound from what seemed right front and clicking sound from center console only between 25-32mph on a deceleration, the instant I accelerated the sound went away. The entire drive shaft was replaced and I no longer have those sounds.

Just to update you guys with what was found with my car.
The driveshaft support was bad. New part was installed for a total of $280, part=130, labor=2.8 hrs =140. Noise is gone, I am a happy guy. This is from an independent shop which i have used for years.
Thx everyone for your inputs.

I suspected it would be the central rubber mounted bearing on the propshaft but the different terminology can lead to misinterpretation, good to know it comes sererate, many makers only sell the centre bearing as part of the whole shaft.
I see the parts manual calls it a support:
