Default Noise under shifter with car in park (P) and brakes pressed

I recently acquired a 2000 SC400 and noticed a strange noise coming from under the cover plate of the shift lever. With the car in "park," when I step on the brake, I hear a clicking noise; when I release the brake, I hear a similar but somewhat different clicking sound. It resembles a door latch locking and then unlocking. I presume this noise is part of the SC400’s “shift lock system.” Is it normal for it to be so loud?

Coincidentally, I had my car at my mechanic's recently because it wouldn't start. Turns out one of my keys was not in sync and the car’s immobilizer system remained active. I don't believe they messed with the shifter but did check codes.

Any thoughts from you experts out there?

I don't think the clicking is related to the no start issue. I have that sound every once in awhile with my 95 and was wondering what it could be as well. All I could find was this thread regarding the LS400, which should be the same.

The clicking noise is the shift lock releasing so you can move the gear selector

Default shift lock noise

After some research, it appears the noise is the shift lock mechanism (solenoid) as it engages and disengages. The question I have is why is it making so much noise now. A few days ago, no sound at all. Does it need to be lubricated or realigned? Is it a sign something is going to go out or malfunctioning at this point?

Thanks for any responses.

It seems as though the issue generates from not pressing the button on top of the shifter when shifting from park to drive etc. The mechanism gets worn out eventually.

There's no button on top of the shifter in my 2000 SC400. There was one on my 1994 SC400.

Anyone try to find out what causes the noise and how to fix it.? It does seem to be working correctly (shift lock/unlock), just annoying sound.
