Need Alittle Help on Differential
Hey names jake
i have a 92 sc300 with a w58 5 speed tranny.. and its still using the auto diff.. so the car gearing is really high.. like 70mph.. your cooking 4500 rpm..
my question is.. what rear end chunk can i put in to lower the gear ratio and have a lsd? i came here from nissans so in a s13 you just dropped a j30 diff and you were set.. ive found alot of issue finding info expecially with my setup.. any help would be greatly appreciated..
92 sc300. 1jzgte/w58 5speed with automatic stock rear end...

this thread has quite a bit information, I just asked this same question about 2 weeks ago. lol.
a lot of people say the 3.76 is the best option for w58/r154 but problem is finding one, or finding one for cheap. other options are 3.6 out of a ls400 gen 1. its gonna take a lot longer to shift gears but better fuel milage and higher miles per hour on freeway. (ali sc3 said on page 3, will get great fuel milage but if your not turbo then your car will feel super slow down low.)
3.9 out of a sc400 which will rev quick and still give you good fuel milage and power off the line.

I remember when I swapped a J30 vlsd into my s13 =) those were fun times indeed, along with my first accidental 270 degree slide which was more fun than dangerous (barely).
yeah the 3.9 is a good place to start with the w58 and a 1jz. then you can drop a lsd into it. I am on the factory 4.08 right now and its not bad on 2jz na-t and w58, but it could be a little lower for highway still. 3.9 would help with that but I wouldn't go to low on the 1JZ to keep some snappiness off the line.
the 3.76 auto tt pumpking is getting harder to find and is expensive when they do come up.
If you do the 3.9 you can enjoy that for now and drop in the LSD when the time comes or even go straight to aftermarket LSD types. most mk4 owners end up selling the stock lsd unit and going TRD eventually, so something to think about just get the ratio you want and dropping in a TRD (if you can find one) or Kaaz or other aftermarket is not a bad idea. Just be sure to reaearch the aftermarket ones, as some are more loud and invasive than the others which are more for track vs street. you will also need to find someone who can set up the diff properly when you install the lsd if you go that route, alot of 4x4 or truck shops have tons of experience with toyota differentials (usually trucks trucks with 4.10's+ and lockers) and they can set up and test the gear contact pattern, backlash, etc... to make sure the diff/lsd does not wear prematurely.
the 3.6 from the LS400 is also a good option, depends on how much you wanted to reduce rpm's at top end. I would probabaly go for this over the 3.9 as I am 2jz na-t and already have a 4.08, but with a 1JZ you might just want to come down to 3.9, but I am sure with all this info you can figure out which one is best for you. unfortunately the simple option from the auto turbo supra only came on a limited number of cars, not like most j30's for the nissan crowd (that was convenient I must say, just look for the orange VLSD oil sticker.. lol good to go).
