Default '98 SC400 Power Steering Pressure Hose Parts Help

Hi everyone. I just purchased a '98 SC400 recently that has a leak in the power steering pressure hose. Like many with the same issue, I decided to go a different route after the dealer quoted a large sum to have it replaced. First thing though - since it's the hoses and not the actual power steering pump that is leaking, should I still be worried about ruining the alternator if I put this off?

I did find an aftermarket replacement hose - Edelmann 80398 - on rock auto, but that is only one of the two hoses that comprise the pressure lines between the pump and rack. I attached a parts diagram for reference - 80398 is the hose with the banjo bolt on the right of the assembly labeled 44403.

I was having trouble finding the other hose on the left (connects to 80398, also with banjo bolt on the end). The Edelmann 80399 looks like the other hose that I need, but it is listed as a part for '92 - '97 SC400 on the sites I find it on.

Has anyone ever used these aftermarket parts? Are the power steering lines different between the '92-'97 and '98-'00 cars?

Here is a previous thread that may give you some help: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-1st-gen-1992-2000/551177-oem-power-steering-hose-for-660-or-braided-stainless-steel-for-65-a.html
I used the Driftmotion stainless steel high pressure power steering hose for around $80 and couldn't be happier. It's kind of hard to install because of the angle of the fittings and the rigidity of the stainless steel line but well worth the effort. I have a 92 SC400 but should be the same part for your car. The fluid under high pressure out of the hose will not only ruin your alternator over time but make one hell of a mess of your engine compartment. Definitely needs to be fixed before you have more problems. Articles on this sight how to bleed air out of the system after install too. Good luck.

oh and be sure to center the copper crush washers as good as you can. I called them and they walked me through the orientation of the hose and it made a ton of sense why they designed it that way. good dudes over there.

Thanks for the tips everyone; I looked at the driftmotion part and wish I went that route; looks like a nice piece of kit.

Anyway, just wanted to update in case anyone ends up going my route. I already had one of the hoses from rock auto so I went ahead and ordered the second one. Turns out it fits my '98 even though it wasn't listed as such on the website.

Finally had the chance to replace my lines this week and it was basically a like for like replacement of the OEM hoses. Hopefully they hold up better those did!

For the sake of the next person searching, please clarify exactly what RockAuto parts (and numbers) worked.

Thanks

I ended up using the same parts I mentioned originally; the Edelmann 80398 (hose to rack) and Edelmann 80399 (hose from pump). The 80399 was the part listed under '92 - '97 models but not '98 and up, but it worked great.

Thanks Lebrian!
Keep us posted on this. This may be the first SC400 option that is cheaper, and preserves all functionality.

So to confirm, the Driftmotion stainless line does fit the SC400 as well?

Yes, the driftmotion line should fit all SC400's since the power steering lines are the same on all model years. The driftmotion line just deletes the power steering air control valve function, which most have said made a barely noticeable difference.

Having the same mess here with the hose, wanted to build my own lines, but I think I'm going to go the a local shop so they can make me a 3.5' hydraulic hose with 2 -6 an 90 degree whose ends with 2 metric adapters.
Just don't want to wait a week to get it.
Driftmotion hose looks like a great option!

Need some advice. I replace the psp and hp hoses. But started to have leaking again. I cleaned everything and added the uv due to try to find the leak as it looked like it was coming from the banjo bolt/hp hose. But I am seeing the uv dye coming from what I think is the inlet hose port. (The bigger hose on the bottom of the reservoir)….there’s a metal plate or bracket it connects into that attaches to the psp. I’m also getting uv dye from the bottom bolt of that same metal plate/bracket.

I’ve attached some photos. You can see the photo without the black light and nothing there then with the black light you can see the glowing greenish colored uv dye.
does anyone know the part number for this plate is or what the best way to fix these 2 leaks are?
