Default SC400 Upgrades?

I recently purchased a 1993 SC400 with only 87,000 miles on it and in excellent condition. I am very happy with the car but want to get a little more out of it. I am having a little trouble finding aftermarket parts vendors for this car, any help would be appreciated. Right now I am thinking of doing intake and exhaust work. I am looking at picking up an Ingen intake kit, anyone have any opinions on the quality and performance of this product? Is there a better CAI out there? Should I look into getting a bigger MAF and if so where do I get one? Also, is there a company that sells headers or a catless exhaust for these cars? I am also thinking about getting a nitrous kit, am I just insane or is this reasonable on this motor? Sorry about all the newbie questions but just wanted to get them out there. Thanks for all your help.

Pete

Pete,

Save your money and buy a Torque Converter (TC). Precision Industries makes a great unit. its the best bang for the buck for the 400's. Cost around 900$, but well worth it.

Keep the intake stock for now, as messing with it will loose Hp in most cases. No bigger MAF available as of now.....very expensive conversions are an option, but were talkin expensive! Trust me, leave the intake alone (I know that goes beyond all conventional wisdom). Check out www.planetsoarer.com and search for the "BFI" if you feel like you have to modify your intake.

Exhaust- stock isn't bad, but can be improved. If your looking for performance, either replace it all or forget it. Go to a reputable shop for estimates, as price varies from city to city. There are no bolt on kits, so its all custom. Headers are available from Australia (see the same website), but they aren't a direct fit, and cost alot. Unless you have the money to go all the way, just replace your cats with high flows, and possibly change your center resonator. If you plan on keeping mods tame, go with 2.25" piping. If you plan on NOS or a Supercharger, or heavy motor work, go with 2.5".

A 75 shot of NOS, is great to start with. The SC will need a better fuel pump for anything more, and it would be nice insurance for even the 75 shot anyway. Cats on the SC will burn up quickly on NOS, so do your exhaust first w/ fresh high flow cats.

Don't forget to get some nice wheels and suspension mods too! Good luck.

Hey, I'm a noob here on the board and bringing a thread back from the dead, but I'm looking at getting an sc400 sometime towards the end of the summer when I sell my 3000gt and was most likely gonna run some kind of nitrous kit on it when I get it. I figured I would have to upgrade the fuel pump with anything over a 75 shot cause its the same with the 3000gt/stealths, but had a few questions.....

1. How are the injectors size-wise? Are they big enough to support a 100 or 125 shot?

2. You said that the cats would burn up pretty quickly on the bottle....how quickly?...depending on how many miles are on the car?

3. I know nitrous is pretty stressful on an engine, but how do the 4 litres hold up to it?

4. What fuel pump should you upgrade to if you plan on running more than a 75 shot? Is the stock TT supra pump big enough?

If I think of anything else that I am missing, or if you have any other info that would be useful, I would appreciate it. Thanks for the help.

Unless you make tons of $$$ i would just leave it alone. I regret very much spending 1250 on that ECU upgrade that I never use, and the first person to offer me $1,000 and their stock computer will get it shipped to them.

Modding costs way to money and really isnt worth it. Just buy a fast car and don't touch it.

The only thing I planned on doing was adding a shot of nitrous to it just for the hell of it. I just want a car that I can drive every day and isn't gonna give me a bunch of **** like my 3000GT has. While I have it I'm just gonna save and save until I graduate so I can buy something I want.....like a VR4 or Z06 or an ACR . But I would like to get some of my questions answered just in case I do feel like modding it just enough so I can run a 100 or 150 shot safely.

Most of the people I have asked said you can probably safely run a 75 wet shot on the stock fuel system without too much problem. If you want to run a bigger shot try a Walbro fuel pump. Should cover your needs. The 1uzfe should hold up pretty well to nitrous. I'd get a compression and leakdown test down prior to adding any big HP.

Thanks.

By the way, you got any pictures of your car? M5s are one of my favorite wheels

Just wish they had a bigger lip. I'll be ordering some coilovers in a couple weeks.
