Default sc400 exhaust

hi, i currently picked up an sc400 and did not think the car would be so quiet for a v8. I have looked around the threads and people are saying to delete resonators and cats. Exactly how long does it take and how hard is it to get it done? Will that provide the deep v8 rasp and growl I am looking for? and also any cheap exhaust i should look into? not looking to spend much but still have the v8 grunt.

I wouldn't delete the cat (esp since you are in CA). Resonator delete is just a matter of removing and rewelding a straight pipe in place; shouldn't take long to do. Though, there are three of them (at least on my 98 there are) to do if you wanted to remove them all.

There is the common Manzo (aka M2) axe back exhaust. Even with factory resonators it sounds nicer and looks stock-ish. On my SC300 I left the cats and resonators in but have an M2 exhaust. It's loud enough with the NA I-6. V-8 differs.

Definitely don't delete the cats. There is little to gain and more to lose in CA by doing so. Deleting the last two stock resonators does change the sound a bit.

Just the last two resonators removed and cats left in with stock mufflers:

Resonators removed, cats left in, ebay mufflers:

Resonators removed, cats left in, M2 exhaust installed:

With cats and all resonators left in and just the M2 cat back mufflers:
