A340E Drain and Fill: Dexron III VS Dexron VI?
About to do a complete drain & fill on my Trans VIA cycling the engine & draining the fluid through trans cooler line - only way you should change the fluid IMO ( more on that in a moment)
At any rate, last time around I used Dexron VI, because Synthetic is good chitt, right? At any rate, I didn't notice any abnormalities, shifts were crisp and beautiful. This time around i've done some research (great idea, right?) and a lot of people are saying to stick with the Dex III?
Is there any good reason not to use Dex VI? Other then the fact our vehicles don't call for it (and it's expensive as hell)? I'm looking for something technical here, not just the same old same old "Our vehicles weren't designed for it".
Also what is the total fluid capacity for the A340E? Something like 8 quarts I think?
On to the fluid change. The way I do it is to disconnect the Transmission cooler line at the cooler, then run a rubber drain hose to a bucket. Start the car, idle for 5-10 seconds, then kill it (key off). Add a quart or two (however much you guesstimated came out) start the car, repeat. Do this until the Fluid coming out of the cooler line (and into the drain bucket) is nice and red. 100% Fluid change.
Whatever you do don't let the fluid drain for more then 10 seconds before killing the engine and adding more fluid. This is important.
Thanks guys.

Did you mean to type TYPE IV instead of 'VI'? I'm just trying to clarify because I work at a Toyota dealership and we sell Toyota Type IV and Type WS. WS is World Standard and that usually goes in every Toyota built after 2010. The Type IV fluid goes in the 5spd autos that started in 1998+. Type IV is a synthetic blend fluid. WS is a full synthetic. I've heard of people putting Type IV in the earlier 4spd transmissions but whenever I get in an early 90s car I just order up DEX III fluid because that's what our computers say.
The Type IV runs a bit thin in the older transmissions, which would be a good thing if you have a built auto but bad if you've got a stock one with a ton of miles.
