Question Car running rough and smoking at norm temps

Please forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong section, but I have a friend with a 92sc300. The cars starts and runs, but at norm operating temps the engine runs rough and smokes at times. The dealership told him that it needed a valve job at $3500 plus. Now I dont think he overheated it, but any ideas what it could be? Worse comes to worse that we do have to replace the engine or what not. Are all the 2jzge's the same until the vvti years? I have a source for a 95 supra na motor. IM hoping it doesnt come to this, but would this drop in and hook up just fine?

ANy help would be appreciated.

Default

run a leakdown test, this will give you a good idea as to condition of valves and rings. But if your engine does turn out to be bad, the supra engine will work.
