I have a 1997 sc400 who has started slipping, my question is after doing some research not all a340e's are equal so what are my options so I can start looking for replacements.

The safest bet is from a 96 or 97 SC, it will be OBDII and should have all the sensors you ecu is expecting to be there. I know the 98+ transmissions are different, more gears and sensors. I don't know about the 92-95 transmissions, they will physically bolt up but I'm not sure if the electrical side is the same.

So if I'm reading this correct a 97 would work for a 96? I'm hunting for a used one before i consider a rebuild or even maybe a reman.

They're all 4 speed transmissions, only way to get more gears is the 2001 GS400 thats a 5 speed.. 92-94 do not have the overdrive signal

I'm not looking for fancy, just to get my ride going again. My 96 Sc400 needs a trans and I'm at wits end trying to find one or some local to rebuild it in Connecticut.

I stand corrected, 97 is a 5spd transmission that should still work, and bolt on mechanically, but I'm not sure electronically. That I can be corrected on the subject by someone with more knowledge about it. According to ******* site, I can't link it, your transmission is probably more aligned with the older versions 91-96 These are all the part numbers I found.
Transmission part numbers
3500-24340 4spd 91-93
3500-24360 4spd 91-93
3500-24380 5spd 97-2000

I ended up going with a used 97 sc400 transmission that has 177k. New filter and fluid, still running 25k later. Found out it was a clogged in radiator cooler that killed it from overheating. allforeignautoparts.com is where I got mine for $225+$150 shipping. Then paid a small shop to install it for 400. I needed to adjust the line pressure control cable on the throttle body though on my own to make it shift right but after that it works great.

I know everything should bolt up but it's just 96 is OBD2. Like freshly introduced that model year. I'm uncertain if the older models have any specific mounts or can accept whatever I can porry over from the current trans. 97 from the rest of the threads so far have seen should work but don't know what or if anything changed.
By the way Spen good looking out. Been casting a large net over this issue so far with empty responses from my states salvage yards. Hopefully this one pans out.
