After you machine the head surface, then you do a valve job that sinks the valves back into the combustion chamber a ways, getting some of that head volume back, along with allowing you to use those Crower cams without the lash caps.

Hopefully, I'm wrong. Someone care to check my reasoning?
I guess you could hardface the cams, but I'm not comfortable with adding material to the lobe.
