Default Looking for LSD

New in the Toyota/Lexus world, but I have been doing some reading and looking around, but I would like some inputs or maybe links to threads I haven't found.

I got myself a 98 GS300 JZS160, but from what I understand they usually if not always came without LSD and I want one. From what I understand the stock diff is a 200mm ring gear with a 3.92 ratio, wich is physically similar to a small type supra soarer diff. And the other option wich is more work, and costs a bit more is to do an aftermarket lsd.

So anyone that has done a oem type change, what diff did you use and any modifications needed?

There was actually not any LSD available on any GS in the USA prior to the GS-F and that was a smaller diff that is t interchangeable with your car. The Aristo V300 had a LSD as an option but it was rare. It was pretty much the same unit offered in the Twin Turbo Supra from ‘93-‘96. And they are rare and incredibly valuable. A high mileage, well used unit imported by a JDM specialist will have a asking price of about $2000! So the aftermarket has stepped in and created a few awesome options. They will run you about $900 up to $1500 for the u it and the. You’ll need to get it installed. The only budget option would be to get your diff welded up so it’s locked up which has some drivability issues.
And 3:92 ratio is about as low as is available. There are some older SC300’s with 4:08 and 4:27 ratios. But you would be better adding power over lowering the ratio.

Yeah so that is around the same thing I have come to, there's a bit more work installing aftermarket options rather than a complete original one.

Welding the diff isn't a great option for me as we have actual winters and snow, so welded gets a bit spicy 😂

Will look around for some supra diffs in the between time...

The Supra differential came with 3:76 gears, so lower than a GS400 but not quite as low as the 3:92 ratio in GS300. I believe the ring size that is used to identify the diff case that came in all 2GS’s was a 200mm, and that is what came in some Supra’s with LSD, before you buy one, make sure you actually pull the cover off and verify that it is an LSD and make sure there aren’t any cracks where the front support arms meet the front of the case. This is where they usually start to break when abused or had some serious torque put through it. There are a lot of threads about people thinking all Supras had a LSD and they paid $1500 for an open diff with nothing special about it.
I picked up a gs300 diff for the low gears and then welded it up, and kept my original one for winters or if the welded diff was too obnoxious, it’s only a few hours to swap em, but i don’t ever drive it in the winter anyway, and don’t plan on ever selling it, so I will probably never swap my back, but it’s nice to have the option and I have only linvested about $100, there are so many things I would love spend $1000 on for my car…. I do see them on eBay once in a while.

Yeah it's absolutely easiest way out to weld it, but with the tight and twisty roads around here, it can get sketchy even with just rain.

A good setup lsd is really nice to have in winter as it won't just spin off the one tire and use more of the grip.

A supra diff would be nice as the stock ones pretty quiet and locks nicer, but they are pricy and not as easily found as the aftermarket ones.

That Giken super limited slip is supposed to operate just a smooth and quiet as an oem one.you can have them set up to lock as hard or smooth as you want, and then if you want to adjust iit in the future iby adding or removing some of the clutchs.
The other one Giken makes that gets labeled as Advance Trax 1,5 or 2.0,or something like that, is more for track duty, they are noisy and need to be worked on regularly. And it sounds like that’s not what you want at all, so if you can’t find an OEM one, I am sure could find someone here has the Giken in their car and can tell you how it’s worked out for them

Yeah it's also possible to do surface treatment for even quieter operation, but I will look into that one for sure. It will probably not happen this year, got a bit of rust that needs fixing first.
