SRT VS. K & N Intake Info Needed...
I have a quick question regarding the sound/performance of the SRT Intake and would like anyone to comment or give some positive or negative input.
First off, I have a GS 400 with the K & N Air intake and I love the sound of it. I have read many thread and have searched but I have not come across anyone that has gone from a K & N Intake to the SRT and posted what the difference in sound and performance. Secondly, I personally like the hissing sound as well as the throaty sound when you decide to wake the beast up.
Could anyone school a student or care to comment on this, I would greatly appreciate all of the feed back since I am looking to buy the SRT Intake for my GS.
Cheers,
Revhard191

never had the K&N myself. I went with the SRT right away, and it sounds pretty mean when you open it up. If you don't mind the "risk" of wiring the SRT ECU into your stock ECU, it's well worth the extra $$$ and power gain over the K&N IMO.

I started with the K&N and now have the SRT. I have not dynoed or run at the track since I swapped but there's not any easily detectable performance differerence. Not saying they don't exist - just don't expect miracles. I'm also running the supra 3.76 and PI Torque Converter.
The SRT is louder/raspier (aluminum piping) and there is a bit more hiss/whistle that sounds really cool. Visually the SRT looks nicer - bigger silver pipes vs. black plastic.
I just got the K&N & heat shield custom painted and have a SAFCII sitting in the wings for tuning - so I may play around a bit to see what numbers I can get. Yet another project that I'll get around to at some future time.

I have had the K&N FIPK for over a year and like the way it sounds combined with the exhaust I have! Haven't compared it to a SRT though. Supposedly, the SRT will make more power mainly due to the piggyback ECU supplied. I almost put one on my car, but decided to stay with the K&N and use the SAFC to tune the car after I install the JB headers.
One factor for us Cali guys to consider is the fact that the K&N is CARB certified and the SRT is not.
Yeah, I know the headers will not be either, but they will be easier to "disguise" than the intake (to pass the visual inspection).

Well, my SRT has been debadged and I have the CARB sticker for the old K&N on the inner fender wall. One can only hope that it will pass the visual.
Never had any issues running the K&N. The SRT can't run without the piggyback ECU due to the larger piping.

I have K&N intake + L-Tuned exhaust and I also put in an SAFC-II to do some dyno tuning and gained quite a bit of power.

Revhard191....how is the sound when you get on the gas? Is it noticable at cruising speeds or just when you get on it... I would definiltley consider this intake

I dig the sound and when I am just cruising and it is shifting gears it has a really cool sound almost like a light blow off valve (sssssssttt) and when I get on it, she really comes alive and you can definately hear the VVT-I kick in. I also have the L-Tuned exhaust and it sounds awesome. I will try to figure out how to upload a small clip by friday if I can steal my wife's shiney new digital camera that I bought her for her B-day, along with pics of the intake.
I really appreciate everyones input and will like more opinions on what the difference is should anyone have first hand experience with these two intakes.
When I get more concrete info on the gains, I will more than likely put this intake up in the classifieds.
Keep the info coming guys, I appreciate all of the input that I get to make my decision easier, plus I had planned to buy the SRT as soon as I saved a little more cabbage.

Sorry, couldn't resist... I too would like to know what kind of results Bitkahuna got with the SAFC since I am planning on going that route as well. Hoping to really dial in the A/F ratio and other parameters once I get the JB headers installed...

What happens to the black piece of plastic that sits on the top of the radiator... looks like the stock air induction piece.....From the pictures does that get eliminated when going to a intake system? It must be connected to the stock intake Thanks
The intake looks really good under the hood.... I bet it sounds great with the V8
mmmmmmmm another mod maybe

Yeah, the K&N sounds great under WOT, pretty quiet under normal driving/cruising.
