jsut curious... what if i put a 4.08 rearend into a gs3
all this talk about raising the gearing for v8's made me ponder what if i used a LSD 4.08 in my gs300? would that make the pick up faster?
its about what 3.9x to a 4.08 thats about .2 difference... probally not huh

You will have these happening to your car:-
- better acceleration
- Speedometer will show you are going faster than you really are
- measuring mpg will be off
- Odometer will show you cover more miles than reality

I experience odometer and speedometer being off when I had auto diff in my 6spd MKIV supra. I did that for better 1/4 times. I changed back to 6spd diff after 1 month because I prefer not to shift as much.
The speed sensor is based on the rotations inside the transmission, not the diff size. If you change the diff size, the speed sensor in the transmission will still read the same speed thinking the diff is the same. Its the same logic as riding a multi-speed bicycle. You can pedal the bike at the same rotation speed (engine & transmission), when you shift to a lower gear on your bike (diff), your bike will move slower eventhough your pedal speed is still the same(speed sensor in transmission). Makes sense?
I am speaking from my experience with the Supra. This might not be an issue with the GS.

no it shouldn't change the odometer. paul corrected me the other day. if you get larger wheels (out of spec overall diameter), your speedo will be off, coz' that's where the speed sensors are.
but changing the differential will not change the odometer reading
and yes, putting 4.xx on gs3 will help accel

I wouldn't think going from 3.92 to 4.08 would be worth it. Has anybody done a torque converter in a GS3? Seems like this would be helpful.
What car is the 4.08 from? I guess I'm not familiar with this drive ratio...

4.08 is from Supra MKIV NA. Here's one for sale...

and yeah, if do it, just go ahead and do the 4.2x, i think that's on the old sc right?
bob, there is tc for the gs3, but the effect isn't as dramatic as that for the gs4 as well
