Default Question 2JZGE JDM VS USDM engine swap

Hello all,

I have a 99gs300 with 107k miles. well the piston ring in #2 broke so I bought the same engine but a jdm version w/ around 50k miles. Well, I had a shop do a swap and along the way they found out ALOT of stuff has to come off the USDM engine and be put on the JDM engine. So much stuff that they had to up the bill for swapping an added an additional $400.00. well I don't have the car back yet, but I was wondering if there were any differences between the two engines power wise, since alot of stuff has to be transferred from the USDM to the JDM. does the JDM have more HP? more TQ? is the compression different? any input would help me alot! thanks in advance! oh yeah, it was only the engine, the tranny is still the same.

well, i looked all around town and they ranged from 2500 to 3200 for the USDM. I found someone in florida that specializes in JDM engines, and they gave it to me for 875 + 190 shipped to business. so it was like $1065 for the engine shipped.

why dont you have them swap the block only? Most Likely the block is the same and the minor difference if any is on the head.

hmm.. well the whole point of swapping was hoping that it would take less time to do the swap instead of ripping the block apart and replacing the piston ring. unfortunately, its taking longer than expected so i should have went the other route.

No unless there is a compression differance, but I don't think there is.

There are quite a few differences between the Supra 2JZ-GTE and Aristo 2JZGTEs. I have read it in the Supra forums and I know for sure the waterpump is different. There was a rundown thread somewhere in there if I can find it. The Supra cooling system uses the fan/clutch type vs the aristo just electric fans etc.. Thats all i can remember at the moment.

You also have to remember that with any JDM engine, the wire harnesses are in the wrong place and probably the mounts on the manifolds etc are in the wrong place as well.

well the engine i got, is the clutch fan type, and the fan i have in my car is electric. that was one of the issues they had. they didn't mention anything about the mounts. what they did though is take all the sensors off the usdm engine and put them on the jdm.. alot of work they said.

unless there is a compression difference, there is not a gain i hp. the reason why they dont use the original sensors and wire harness is because the jdm ones are different. they can use the jdm harness but will have to cut and modify them for the US sensors. hope that helps.
