Here are some updated pictures of my new intake pipe with black sleeves. Looks very clean.

Looks nice. I like it better with the black sleeves too. Maybe you'll be able to replace that enormous stock airbox with an aftermarket cone eventually.

Thanks for posting the pics!

Actually I'm not planning to ever get rid of the stock airbox as it works very well in keeping the hot engine bay air out of the intake system. Unless I some day go with a turbo or supercharger the stock airbox will work plenty fine and even better (maybe) with an aftermarket drop in filter. I'm hoping Blitz releases something as it's not the oil charged type, which can and has already messed up the MAF on one guys IS350.

unless that cone is outside the engine bay, the stock airbox will outperform a cone inside the engine bay, as the stock box takes air outside the bay

wonder if the 3GS board will help supply dimensions of their filter for a comparison

I was busted! Yes you are right about that, but from looking around under the hood, I see no way of doing this without cutting a hole in the car.

Newb alert.
So even with a heatshield, a cone will still not do as well? I wouldn't install a cone-type filter though, unless it was non-oiled. And they do exist, that much I know.

Edit: I'm asking because even if you take the airbox out, won't the cold air coming from up from the fender pipes still go to the cone filter?

For a LMS type intake, one would think that the cooler air coming from the front intake air path would work, but from what I noticed is that the intake sucks in air that has the least resistance. And since the area behind the filter is engine bay area and the largest area, most of the air would still be sucked from that and not as much would be coming from the front of the car. Just my .02 Also while keeping the stock airbox you are guaranteed that all the air you get is coming from the front of the car. The stock intake system is already an Excellent engineered piece.

If someone makes a nice air tight heat shield around an LMS type intake system this might work better, but ultimately I believe a true CAI or the JOEZ modified intake pipe methods will yield us the most power.

I'd just like to say that I've had the JoeZ intake on my is300 for about 3 years now (around 39,000 miles) and still love it. Bought a blue toms filter and if you remove the filter cover, it sounds awesome (deep around 4k rpm); but if you leave the cover on, the sound is about the same as stock.
Only problem is when i pump gas, i think the airflow is backed up so the pump stops every 3 seconds...but its only a SMALL price to pay for the looks/performance/sound of the intake.
Im getting my 06 IS in about a week and look forward to buying a new intake for the new car. cant wait
