Default Transmission Strength GS3/GS4

So do the GS300 and GS400 share the EXACT same transmission? How about the GS430? I'm just wondering because I'm about to boost soon. If they are the same exact tranny then it should have no problem holding my 300-320HP(crank power, not wheels) under ultra low boost because thats how much power the GS4's make on stock output. I know there are a couple of you GS4 guys running 400-500hp on the Toyota tranny with just coolers, tq converters, and valve body upgrades.

If the V8 transmission is built stronger, I wonder if it's possible for me to put that tranny in my car...heh

I think they both use the same A650E transmission.

larry @ sp said the A650E tranny can hold up to about 380rwhp without rebuilding. However, even with rebuilding, the unit seems to fail rather quickly even with proper cooling.

FYI, Morris on CL claimed to have a gte with a built gs4 tranny setup and is pushing over 400 rwhp on the 2jz-gte thread in the performance section.

The tranny in a GS400 will not hold up to true 400+ rwhp numbers. It just wont. Even when they are supposedly built they will fail in short order. For the period when they do run you will still have problems bouncing off the limiter. The design of the transmission just doesnt lend itself to high HP, what I am told by builders is that it cannot be built for sustained use at 400+ let alone 500rwhp numbers.

There is something about the tranny does not have 5 full gears, from what they tell me there are something like 3 distinct gears and you get the others by using the overdrive function within the transmission.

Everyone I have talked to with a blown 400 has had tranny problems once they approach 400rwhp

By the way I have a built 1uz with another blown GS400 tranny.

Maybe I'll have to swap to the V160 6-Speed tranny when the time comes. But for now...I think I'll be ok with the stock tranny at low boost

I would think anything under 350rwhp and you should be fine Jaime has been running his with 6psi for some time now and has no issues other than the rev limiter issue.

I've been running 8 psi forever it seems. I have a PI TC, VB upgrade, and cooler. I ran my best ET so far this past weekend with a 12.63@112mph. The tranny has 122K+ on it, although as previously stated that's not on all the components. I've had all the tranny upgrades since before going FI.

The transmission is a huge Achilles. My previous best was 13.0@108. I have always said that my car was a 12 sec car based on my butt dyno and if it would ever shift right. Just about every time I'd have to lift somewhere down track to keep it off the rev limiter, which of course kills your ET's. Well Sunday, it did shift right and hence the results. I ran a couple more 12's too, so it wasn't just a case of a fluke. My first run was 13.0 with me having to lift. I figured I'd be stuck in the same rut, but suddenly the tranny started shifting right. On the 12.6 run, I KNEW it was a good run just because all the gears shifted as they should. I didn't think it would be 12.6 good, but I knew it felt like it should. Now, if I could only have that everytime....I'd be a happy man.

The transmission is not made to take a ton of HP. It will, within moderation, take a good bit. Consider that my best dyno so far has been 400RWHP and 410TQ, I'd say it hold considerably more than it really should if you think about it being designed to hold something more like 250.

Would you need a custom driveshaft to do v160? I was reading the spec on the f150 svt and they have a 4.5" aluminum driveshaft.

this is an old *** thread, but to answer your question, yes, you need a custom drive shaft for the V160. Thats actually one of the least expensive pieces of that swap though. Its relatively inexpensive and quick to have a driveshaft made.

It's too funny to see this old thread get bumped. Jeff is asking questions about transmission strength and thinking of boosting his GS3? Ahhh how the student has become the master
