GS400 thinking of getting a dragon TC what do you guys think?
hi
i have a gs400, i got a srt intake, greddy evo2 exhaust--love the sound..i have most of the suspension upgrades done, like csv2 coilovers , trd strut bars...i was thinking of getting a dragon TC next, i know this topic has been debated, i have read that TC don't make the car any faster overall? but you just get a quick start feeling? or it actually helps?
lastly any of you guys with TC, ever had any problems? my gs400 is my daily driver so don't wana do something that would make it break down..any input would be much appreciated -thanks

UZ214 - There is plenty of material on this site using the search function but I will sum it up for you...Many here feel that the PI TC is hands down the best bang-for-the buck mod you can do for the GS. Some members feel that 0-60 times can drop by as much as .4 seconds! I too am thinking of buying a PI TC in the near future and my car is also a daily driver. Members that have installed this torque converter love it! There are NO reliability issues and drivability is the same as stock! I think there is only 1 member that I have read on here that had a "horror show" with regard to this TC (I think he may have had a defective product) where his transmission got destroyed. Please note, INSTALL A TRANNY COOLER AS WELL! I think you can get them for $75 - $125. It is a MUST if you are going to run a 2800rpm+ stall converter - keeps your tranny running @ cool temps.

I have had TWO PI TC's for the last 50k miles on my GS4, I also have tranny cooler installed since day one. But for some reason, the CEL got turned on after about 25k miles of hard acceleration. It's really fun to drive GS4 with 2800 stall TC. But I just can't live with the CEL on the dash, so after 4 years, I returned my GS back to stock TC. I missed my PI TC a lot, so if you can live with CEL, PI TC is definitely the right direction to go.

I'm having a 3000 rpm stall PI TC put on Friday at JPI on my 01 GS430. He assures me I'll have no CEL and he isn't just removing the CEL bulb. I'll keep you updated after the install.

Hi Jgordon, thanks for replying my other thread, is it possible to ask JPI, what methods he is taking to assure that no CEL will come on? That is the million dollar question.
UZ214, I am in the same boat as you.

I have worked with a reputable tranny shop to resolve the CEL issue. Basically, there's a sensor in the tranny to minitor the slippage of TC. When the TC "slip" higher than the specs and not shifting, the CEL is triggered. I asked them to disable the sensor, but they told me if the sensor was disabled, tranny will not funtion.
So JPI must have some way to modify the tranny specs in the tranny ECU to avoid the CEL trigger. If there's a fix for this, I will purchase my 3rd PI TC again
