Default Lexus Is 3gr-fe And Toyota 2gr-fe Parts Swap

Im hoping there are a few mechanics on this forum who can help me out. Im gonna buy a lexus is300 tomorow (GUlf specs) which uses the 3GR-FE engine. Its simialr to the GS300 engine 3GR-FSE but sans the direct injection. The 3GR-FE engine unfortuantly is only 229 hp. The v6 camry has a 2GR-FE which is essentialy the same series engine but with a bore of 94mm and storke of 83mm. ( the IS has a bore of 87.5, and same stroke). Would it simply be possible to bore out the IS300 engines to make it a 3.5 and replace the cyclinder heads etc with the v6 camry to get the 268hp that the camry is rated at? or is there more to it than meets the eye. Its kinda depressing the v6 camry here in the gulf is faster than the lexus is300 (btw we only get this one model, there is no 250 or 350 here)

yea this is the 2 generation one. The gulf and china only get the 3.0v6. Its not the inline one frmo the previous gemeration. There is no forum for my engine. Thats why im posting here, Essemtially its the one similar to the GS300 but without the direct injection. ITs a new engine, and only offered here so there isnt many mods for it. Im assuming its the same engine as found int he current V6 camrys etc, i just wanna know if its possibel to bore it out and replace the pistons with the camrys one and change the compression ratio andw atever else needs to be done. In anyone familiar with toyota engines could help me out that would be great. Basically its within the same family glass of engines so it really shouldnt be too hard ( i tihnk) let me know

It's extremely unlikely you'll be able to bore it significantly without sleeving it. The latest generation of blocks have cast-in liners, and they're pretty thin. In the service manual it says if the block is worn beyond the standard bore limits, you must replace the block. This means they won't even support a 1 mm factory overbore.

You'd probably find it cheaper to buy a used 3GR-FSE from a junkyard in the US or Japan than to do all the machining necessary to enlarge the cylinders. Keep in mind, you'll have engine management issues with an overbore that large, so you'll need to figure out how to get enough fuel to your enlarged engine as well. Again, it may be a cheaper and easier proposition to get the engine (and engine computer) you want from a US or Japanese source.

I don't have access to the documentation for the 3GR available in the Middle East, so I can't be 100% certain the wiring will be a simple proposition, but I'd take fixing the wiring over machining the block, and I'm the guy who will typically machine something before anything else. JMHO.

Hi ndk, I’ve had my 2Gen IS300 for about 6 months and I can tell you that if you are doubting the performance figures from now you won’t be too pleased with the actual output. The IS is heavier than the camry, so the power-to-weight ratio is quite affected.

My advice would be to hold your hourses and not buy the car until the 2008 models come out, romurs has it that Abdullatif Jameel group are considering bringing the 2GR-FSE this year.

Even if that was not the case, don’t swap… that would be too extream IMO, import one instead. I don’t know how close the 2 engines are to each other but the 3.5 engine is heavily modified to start with (3.5L ->305hp vs 3.0L ->229hp = 0.5L ->76hp or 33% I know that they are using direct injection…etc). So if someone figures out a technique to remap the ECU normal mods to the IS300 (like intake, exhaust… etc) might reveal better than expected hp gains and also forced induction would become a more cost effective mod than what it is at the moment (to the IS350).
